Our department offers several minors for students looking to strengthen their linguistic skills or increase their knowledge about Scandinavian or Baltic cultures. Like our major programs, the minor programs help students understand the world from a different perspective. They also help students hone their research, analysis, critical thinking, and communication skills in a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive academic environment. The region’s innovative approaches to economic, environmental, business and gender equity issues make our minor program the perfect complement to majors in the humanities, arts, STEM, international studies, or business administration.
Language 101 courses are available only in the fall, so students are encouraged to begin the language requirements as early as possible. If you have previous experience studying one of the department languages, schedule a placement test by emailing uwscand@uw.edu.
Declaring a Minor in the Department of Scandinavian Studies
Students in good academic standing may declare the minor at any time by meeting with their major adviser. Please see Undergraduate Advising’s Minor page for additional considerations about earning a minor.
Minor Requirements
Scandinavian Area Studies
Requirements: 15 credits of 1st year Danish, Finnish, Norwegian or Swedish and 20 credits of SCAND course work
Baltic Studies
Requirements: 15 credits of 1st year Estonian/Latvian/Lithuanian and 20 credits of SCAND course work, including at least one Baltic Studies course (SCAND 344, 345, 454 or 455)
Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian or Swedish
Requirements: 15 credits of 1st year Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian or Swedish, 15 credits of 2nd year Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Finnish or Swedish, and 5 credits of SCAND (upper division) OR 5 credits of an upper division language course.
